Big Sur is hands-down one of my favorite places in all of Northern California. And honestly, once you look through these Big Sur engagement photos, you’ll totally get why. From the jaw-dropping cliffs to the cozy redwood forests and sparkling ocean views, it’s a dream location for couples who want engagement photos that feel as epic as their love story. Whether you’re after beachy vibes, a romantic forest feel, or those dramatic cliffside shots, Big Sur has it all. Here’s how to make sure your session goes off without a hitch and you leave with photos you’ll obsess over forever.
When it comes to Big Sur engagement photos, timing is everything. If you want that dreamy, golden glow, aim for “Golden Hour.” This is shortly after sunrise or just before sunset when the light is soft and warm, and trust me, it makes all the difference. Plus, if you opt for a morning session, it’s way quieter—you’ll basically have the place to yourself. However, this particular session pictured was taken during the harsh late-morning sunlight, which gave the session a filmy feel with high contrast, which I absolutely LOVED so, don’t be afraid to shoot at other times, just make sure you work with a photographer who thrives in multiple lighting scenarios.
Big Sur is packed with stunning photo locations, so choosing the right ones is key. Here are a few favorites:
If you’re not sure where to start, hire a photographer who knows the area—they’ll help you find all the best spots and hidden gems.
Your outfits should vibe with Big Sur’s natural beauty. Think flowy dresses, earthy tones, and soft pastels. Keep it comfy, too—tight or stiff clothes will only make you feel awkward. Layers are your best friend because the weather here can switch up in a heartbeat. And if you want some variety, bring a second outfit! You could start casual and then switch to something a little fancier for those dramatic cliffside shots.
Hair tip: Big Sur is breezy! A side braid or half-updo will keep those flyaways at bay and make sure you’re looking photo-ready.
A little prep work goes a long way. There’s barely any cell service on Highway 1, so download an offline map if directions aren’t your strong suit. Make sure to share a solid plan with your photographer before the day of your session—where to meet, which spots you’re hitting, the whole deal. This will save you from stress later.
Also, heads up: as of January 2025, a major stretch of Highway 1 in Big Sur remains closed, and there’s no detour. This means you can’t drive between San Simeon and Carmel right now, so plan your route carefully!
While you could totally do a day trip, I 100% recommend staying for 2-3 days if you can swing it. Big Sur’s weather is unpredictable, and having extra time gives you the flexibility to reschedule your session if needed. Plus, it lets you fully soak in everything this gorgeous area has to offer.
The best photos come from just being yourselves. Laugh, talk, and let your love shine through. Some of the most magical shots happen when you’re not even thinking about the camera—like a quiet moment under the redwoods or a spontaneous laugh on a windy cliff. Trust your photographer to capture all the good stuff.
Big Sur engagement photos aren’t just about the stunning backdrops (though, yeah, those are amazing). They’re about celebrating your love and capturing the excitement of this chapter in your life. So take a deep breath, soak it all in, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure.
Whether it’s the cliffs, beaches, forests, or all of the above, Big Sur has something for every couple. And when you look back on your photos, you’ll remember not just how incredible the scenery was, but how much fun you had creating these memories together. Big Sur is waiting—let’s make some magic!
