A Guide to Planning Your Big Sur Engagement Photos

Big Sur is hands-down one of my favorite places in all of Northern California. And honestly, once you look through these Big Sur engagement photos, you’ll totally get why. From the jaw-dropping cliffs to the cozy redwood forests and sparkling ocean views, it’s a dream location for couples who want engagement photos that feel as epic as their love story. Whether you’re after beachy vibes, a romantic forest feel, or those dramatic cliffside shots, Big Sur has it all. Here’s how to make sure your session goes off without a hitch and you leave with photos you’ll obsess over forever.

Timing Is Everything

When it comes to Big Sur engagement photos, timing is everything. If you want that dreamy, golden glow, aim for “Golden Hour.” This is shortly after sunrise or just before sunset when the light is soft and warm, and trust me, it makes all the difference. Plus, if you opt for a morning session, it’s way quieter—you’ll basically have the place to yourself. However, this particular session pictured was taken during the harsh late-morning sunlight, which gave the session a filmy feel with high contrast, which I absolutely LOVED so, don’t be afraid to shoot at other times, just make sure you work with a photographer who thrives in multiple lighting scenarios.

Find Your Perfect Spot

Big Sur is packed with stunning photo locations, so choosing the right ones is key. Here are a few favorites:

  1. Pfeiffer Beach: If you’ve never seen purple sand before, you’re in for a treat. Between the unique colors and the iconic Keyhole Rock, this spot brings all the magic.
  2. Bixby Creek Bridge: This is the spot for those iconic cliffside shots. It’s dramatic, it’s scenic—it’s Big Sur in a nutshell.
  3. Garrapata State Park: Think wildflowers, rugged cliffs, and trails that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. It’s perfect if you want a mix of greenery and ocean views.
  4. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park: This is the place to soak in those towering redwoods. Or, for something extra special, rent a private cabin at Glen Oaks. Their property is tucked into the redwoods, and it’s straight-up magical for photos.

If you’re not sure where to start, hire a photographer who knows the area—they’ll help you find all the best spots and hidden gems.

Dress for the Occasion

Your outfits should vibe with Big Sur’s natural beauty. Think flowy dresses, earthy tones, and soft pastels. Keep it comfy, too—tight or stiff clothes will only make you feel awkward. Layers are your best friend because the weather here can switch up in a heartbeat. And if you want some variety, bring a second outfit! You could start casual and then switch to something a little fancier for those dramatic cliffside shots.

Hair tip: Big Sur is breezy! A side braid or half-updo will keep those flyaways at bay and make sure you’re looking photo-ready.

Plan Ahead (Like, Really Ahead)

A little prep work goes a long way. There’s barely any cell service on Highway 1, so download an offline map if directions aren’t your strong suit. Make sure to share a solid plan with your photographer before the day of your session—where to meet, which spots you’re hitting, the whole deal. This will save you from stress later.

Also, heads up: as of January 2025, a major stretch of Highway 1 in Big Sur remains closed, and there’s no detour. This means you can’t drive between San Simeon and Carmel right now, so plan your route carefully!

Stay a While

While you could totally do a day trip, I 100% recommend staying for 2-3 days if you can swing it. Big Sur’s weather is unpredictable, and having extra time gives you the flexibility to reschedule your session if needed. Plus, it lets you fully soak in everything this gorgeous area has to offer.

Relax and Enjoy the Moment

The best photos come from just being yourselves. Laugh, talk, and let your love shine through. Some of the most magical shots happen when you’re not even thinking about the camera—like a quiet moment under the redwoods or a spontaneous laugh on a windy cliff. Trust your photographer to capture all the good stuff.

Final Tips

  1. Be mindful of crowds. Weekdays and early mornings are your best bet to avoid tourists.
  2. Bring props or personal touches if you want! A picnic setup, your favorite book, or even your dog can make your session feel totally you.
  3. Embrace the weather. Windy? Lean into it for that windswept, romantic vibe. Foggy? It just adds a moody, magical touch to your photos.

Your Love Story, Big Sur Style

Big Sur engagement photos aren’t just about the stunning backdrops (though, yeah, those are amazing). They’re about celebrating your love and capturing the excitement of this chapter in your life. So take a deep breath, soak it all in, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure.

Whether it’s the cliffs, beaches, forests, or all of the above, Big Sur has something for every couple. And when you look back on your photos, you’ll remember not just how incredible the scenery was, but how much fun you had creating these memories together. Big Sur is waiting—let’s make some magic!
