So, you’ve decided the traditional big wedding isn’t for you. Instead, you’re eyeing Hawaii for an epic elopement. Amazing choice!
But now what? Planning an elopement (especially far from home) can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’re asking yourself: Which island should we choose? Do we need permits for a beach ceremony? How do we get a marriage license out there? You might even be Googling "how to elope in Hawaii" and drowning in info overload. Take a breath. I promise, it’s not as complicated as it seems.
Don't worry! Tons of couples feel just like you do when they start this journey too...The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out alone. This guide is going to break it down step by step, so you’ll know exactly what to do (and in what order) to plan your Hawaii elopement like a pro. Sound good? Let’s get you from confused to confident!
As an experienced elopement photographer, I've helped dozens of adventurous couples plan unforgettable, unique, laid-back, & meaningful elopement experiences. In other words, this isn’t my first luau! Haha. I’ve spent years exploring Hawaii’s most beautiful spots, from secret waterfalls on Kauai to sun-drenched beaches on Maui, and I know what it takes to craft an incredible elopement here. Why trust me? For one thing, one of my besties is a Hawaii-native, so I can tell you from experience what each island offers (and the hidden gems only locals know). I'm more than just a photographer, think of me as your personal elopement guide. I’m here to help with planning – whether that’s suggesting the perfect spot for your “I do,” hooking you up with amazing local vendors, or navigating those pesky permits and marriage license details. My whole vibe is about keeping things fun, stress-free, and true to YOU as a couple. Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of planning your Hawaii elopement!
First things first – where in Hawaii are you going to elope? Hawaii isn’t just one island; it’s a whole chain of islands, each with its own personality and landscapes. Choosing the right island (and specific spot) is key to creating the vibe you want. Do you want towering green mountains? A secluded beach? A roaring waterfall? Let’s break down the main island options and what makes each special.
(Click desired spot to jump!)
Nothing beats the classic toes-in-the-sand ceremony. Hawaii’s beaches are the stuff of actual dreams, and each island has its own iconic shoreline to offer. Whether you’re going for soft white sand, dramatic coastline views, or unique black sand backdrops, here are a few faves:
no. 1
Crystal-clear water, lush green mountains in the background, and golden sand that glows at sunset. It’s peaceful, private-feeling, and straight-up stunning for sunset ceremonies.
no. 2
Famous for its soft sand and those cute twin islands in the distance (called the Mokulua Islands), Lanikai is sunrise gold. Mornings here are calm, glowy, and honestly perfect for a just-us-two moment.
no. 3
Waianapanapa State Park in Maui is the black sand beach of your dreams. Bold, moody, and surrounded by lava rock cliffs and lush jungle. It’s dramatic in the best way and makes for the most unique elopement gallery.
no. 4
Over the years, I’ve discovered some hidden beach gems that feel like total paradise – private, peaceful, and perfect for couples wanting something truly off-the-radar. I don’t publicly share these locations because increased tourism can overwhelm and damage these delicate areas, and not everyone follows Leave No Trace principles or understands the importance of proper permits. But for my elopement couples? I’m more than happy to guide you to these breathtaking spots that still feel sacred and untouched.
If you’ve ever wanted to say your vows in front of a waterfall straight out of a movie scene, Hawaii’s got you covered. Waterfall elopements are romantic, adventurous, and the kind of magical that’ll make your jaw drop. Here are a few of my absolute favorite waterfall elopement spots:
no. 1
Super accessible and totally stunning, these falls are right off the Road to Hana but still feel like a secret. Surrounded by rainforest and usually with fewer crowds than the more famous spots, it’s a great choice if you want those dramatic jungle waterfall vibes without a crazy hike. Just keep in mind this parking lot is super small, so large groups are a no-go.
no. 2
Tucked along a lush trail near Kapa’a, this gem has multiple falls and a jungle-y vibe that feels like a real-life fairytale. The hike is moderate and 100% worth it. It’s quiet, dreamy, and perfect for couples who want a little adventure and a lot of wow.
no. 3
Okay, this one’s for my adventurous babes. It’s a bit of a trek (we’re talking 4 miles in and 4 miles out), but you’re rewarded with a 300-foot waterfall that feels absolutely unreal. If you want to earn your elopement views and don’t mind getting muddy, this spot is next-level epic.
no. 4
Hawaii also has some great waterfall options located on private land. These waterfall options are each stunning, and they comes with the bonus of being on a private property, so you won’t be dodging tourists mid-vows. Perfect for couples who want luxury meets wild nature, and the area all to themselves for optimum privacy.
Craving a wild, adventurous, jungle vibe? Hawaii’s rainforests are lush, mystical, and filled with magical light filtering through oversized leaves. These spots feel sacred and secret – perfect for couples who want something a little more off-the-grid.
no. 1
Tucked away on the eastern side of the island, along the Road to Hana, this lesser-known rainforest gem is all african tulip trees, tropical flowers and towering trees. It feels deeply untouched and peaceful, perfect for couples craving a private, wild-in-the-best-way backdrop.
no. 2
This area feels ancient and sacred. Towering rainbow eucalyptus, monstera climbing the trees, birdsong in the air, and that misty forest vibe make this location feel like a fairytale come to life. The mountain views from along the trail are awe-inspiring.
no. 3
Throughout the islands, you’ll find incredible private gardens that allow elopements. These spots offer lush tropical plants, pathways draped in vines, and curated beauty that feels like you stepped into Eden. Plus, they're usually more private and well-maintained than open public forests.
If you're dreaming of saying your vows amidst towering peaks, lush valleys, or atop volcanic craters, Hawaii's diverse landscapes have got you covered. Here are some top picks
no. 1
Nestled on Oahu's windward coast, Kualoa Ranch offers dramatic green cliffs and sweeping ocean views. Known for its cinematic landscapes (think Jurassic Park vibes), it's a private venue that provides both seclusion and stunning scenery. Whether you're into lush valleys or serene beaches, Kualoa has a spot that'll make your heart skip a beat.
no. 2
Imagine exchanging vows above the clouds at 10,000 feet elevation. Haleakalā's summit offers a surreal, otherworldly experience with its expansive crater views and vibrant sunrises. It's a bit of a trek, but for couples seeking a celestial backdrop, this dormant volcano delivers an unforgettable setting.
no. 3

If you're envisioning a ceremony that's both intimate and luxurious, these private resorts provide the perfect backdrop: Each of these venues offers a distinct ambiance, catering to different tastes and preferences.
no. 1
Located on Oʻahu's North Shore, Waimea Valley is a lush botanical garden steeped in Hawaiian history. With multiple venue options like the Main Lawn, Amphitheater, and Palm Meadow, you can choose a setting that resonates with your vision. The valley's rich cultural significance adds a profound depth to your ceremony, making it more than just a beautiful location.
no. 2
Located in Kaneohe, Haiku Gardens offers a serene garden setting with panoramic views of the Koʻolau Mountains. The venue boasts a private pond and lush tropical landscapes, creating a tranquil atmosphere for your special day. With customizable wedding packages and an on-site restaurant, Haleiwa Joe's, your elopement can seamlessly transition into a delightful reception.
no. 3
Offering awe-inspiring views of the Pacific and Mauna Kahalawai, or West Maui Mountains, Molokini Bluff at the Grand Wailea is a spectacularly picturesque spot for your ceremony, especially if you want to include some guests and have a more traditional style wedding day. Here, you’ll marry to the sounds of palm trees swaying and waves gently lapping around you.
Even though Hawaii is considered one state, each island has a bit of a different vibe, and has different things to offer. If you're still not sure, based on the above locations exactly which Hawaiian island will suit your elopement best, let's break down what each island has to offer!
Welcome to Kauai, the Garden Isle, where it feels like you’ve stepped into a Jurassic Park movie (minus the dinos). Kauai is green, lush, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. If you’re craving a super intimate, nature-centric elopement, this is your island. Think towering waterfalls, emerald mountains, and secluded coves. Kauai is quieter and less developed than, say, Oahu or Maui. The vibe is adventurous and intimate. You might get a little rain (that’s why it’s so green!), but often that means a rainbow during your ceremony – how magical is that? For couples who want those wild, hidden tropical spots and don’t mind a bit of mud on their hiking boots, Kauai is pure elopement bliss.
5 things unique to kauai
Maui is often called the Valley Isle, and it’s the perfect blend of ease and adventure. Dreaming of a golden sandy beach at sunset? Maui’s got tons of gorgeous beaches (Kapalua, Makena, you name it). Into luxury resorts and spa vibes? Wailea and Kaanapali have you covered for a pampered stay. But Maui isn’t just resorts – it’s also home to the famous Road to Hana, a jungle drive with waterfalls galore where you could stop and say your vows next to a fern-covered waterfall. And don’t forget Haleakalā – a massive volcano crater where couples literally go above the clouds for sunrise, it's located at over 10,000 ft in elevation. Imagine a sunrise elopement up there with a blanket and cocoa (talk about unforgettable!). Maui’s vibe is romantic and relaxed, with plenty of adventure woven in. It’s great if you want beautiful beaches plus options for activities like snorkeling, whale watching (in winter), or scenic hikes on your trip.
Oahu is the most popular island, home to Honolulu and the famous Waikiki Beach. If you want a mix of convenience and epic scenery, Oahu might be your jam. It’s easier to get to (tons of direct flights) and has the most options for hotels, restaurants, and nightlife – great if you want your elopement trip to have some city fun along with nature. But don’t think Oahu is just city vibes; it’s got stunning spots for elopements. Picture saying your vows on a white sand beach like Lanikai (with its unbelievably turquoise water), or at Sunset Beach on the North Shore as surfers catch waves behind you. Oahu also has dramatic mountains (the Koʻolau Range) which make a killer backdrop for photos if you find the right lookout or hiking trail. One thing to note: Oahu has more people around, so privacy can be harder to find than on Kauai or Big Island. But with a local guide (hi, that’s me!) you can still discover secret beaches or lush gardens away from the crowds. The vibe is vibrant and fun – perfect for couples who want a little bit of everything, from surfing in the morning to dining in a hip Honolulu spot at night.
5 things unique to oahu
The Big Island feels like a whole different world — it’s raw, wild, and ridiculously diverse. You can literally go from a black sand beach to a snow-capped mountain in the same day. Here are five epic things to do while you’re here for your elopement adventure:
5 things unique to oahu
Pro Tip: As you choose your location, also consider the time of day and season. Sunrise on a mountain vs. sunset on a beach gives totally different moods (both awesome). Hawaii is pretty much beautiful year-round, but some areas get more rain in winter or have big waves at certain times. If you work with me, I’ll help you figure out the best spot and timing for the most epic experience and photos.
For those dreamy, soft-lit photos, aim for sunrise or sunset. Early mornings are quieter, and sunsets give that golden glow. Early mornings and late afternoons (known as the "golden hour") are perfect for capturing the colors and textures of the cliffs and ocean, but if intimacy is your thing then we definitely recommend sunrise.
Now that you’ve got a location in mind, it’s time to assemble your dream team and figure out where you’re gonna sleep (because yes, you deserve an amazing place to wake up as newlyweds!). Even an elopement has a few key vendors to make the day run smoothly and beautifully. And since you’re traveling to Hawaii, you’ll want to lock down lodging that fits your vibe and is convenient for your plans.
Let’s keep it real: planning a destination elopement can be tricky when you’re thousands of miles away. That’s why having someone on the ground who knows all the ins and outs is a game-changer. When you book me as your photographer, you’re getting more than just pretty pictures – you’re basically getting a personal elopement consultant/best friend/guide rolled into one.
From the moment you say “heck yes, let’s do this,” I’ll jump in to assist with all the details we just talked about. Need vendor recommendations? I’ll send you a list of my hand-picked favorites (officiants who are awesome, makeup artists who show up on time and do amazing work, florists who can whip up the perfect tropical bouquet – you name it). Not sure how to get a permit for that secret beach? I handle that for you or guide you through it, so you don’t have to stress. I’ll help craft a timeline for the day – figuring out things like what time we should start getting ready, when the lighting will be best for photos, how long it takes to drive to that waterfall – so that you two can just relax and enjoy the moment.
Think of me as your built-in planner. I’ve helped plan dozens of Hawaii elopements, so I know what pitfalls to avoid and how to make things run smooth like butter. I’ll remind you of little things (sunblock, comfortable shoes for the hike, did you pack your marriage license documents?) and big things (have a backup rain plan, best timing for sunset, etc.). And on the day-of, I’m there not just snapping pics but also pinning boutonnieres, fluffing your dress, grabbing you water – all the random stuff a trusty sidekick would do.
The best part? I’m just as excited about your elopement as you are! I genuinely care that you have an incredible experience. My goal is that by the time you arrive in Hawaii, you feel like you’ve got a friend there who’s got everything under control. Past couples have told me that having a photographer who also guided them through the process was the best decision – it took a huge weight off and let them fully enjoy their adventure. That’s exactly what I want for you, too.
Capturing your day is so important – these are the memories you’ll look back on forever. (Shameless plug: that’s my role! Not only will I photograph all the big and little moments, but I’ll also help you plan locations, timeline, and more.) Choose a photographer who knows Hawaii well and whose style you love, since they’ll also likely double as a bit of a guide. Learn more about working with me in Hawaii by clicking the button below!
You might be choosing to elope because the idea of a big wedding feels overwhelming, costly, or maybe even both. That’s why I’m here: to make sure your elopement is as easy, meaningful, and stress-free as it can be.
Here’s what’s included in all my packages:
"Salisha is AMAZING!! My husband surprised me with bridal pictures in Yosemite for our honeymoon and this was the highlight of our honeymoon for sure! Salisha is not only a photographer, but feels like your best friend right when you meet her! She’s one of a kind photographer who was willing to hike to Taft Point with us for the perfect picture AND even hiked back with us after dark! She went the extra mile (quite literally) for us to get some of the most stunning pictures!! These pictures we will cherish for many many years to come and we are so glad we chose Salisha to document this special moment in our lives!"
"Salisha is AMAZING! We were looking for a elopement photographer to capture our special day and I am beyond grateful that we chose to work with Salisha at Storybook Photography. My husband and I never take photos but she worked her magic and the photos came out better than I could have ever imagined. Salisha was such a pleasure to work with, I couldn’t have asked for a better photographer. She really makes you feel like you’ve known her for ages. She’s also a PRO at posing you if you’re not quite sure how to pose. She has such a creative eye and will think up shots that end up turning out amazing. I can't express my gratitude enough."
I found Salisha on Instagram while browsing for elopement photographers. She responded so quickly to my inquiry and helped us so much along the way. What stood out to me the most is she does it all. She helped me pick beautiful locations, took amazing photos, was our minister and she helped us plan the day around bringing our pup. The day went smoothly and she was so kind. I 100% recommend booking with her.
Think about who and what you need to pull off your Hawaii elopement. The good news: it’s usually way fewer people than a big traditional wedding. Most eloping couples hire a handful of awesome vendors to handle the essentials. Here are the main players to consider:
Blooms by Kim - Kauai
Blue Orchid - Kauai
Bella Bloom - Maui
Hala Tropical Flowers - Maui
Maui Palm Tree Floral - Maui
Designs by Hemingway - Oahu
Belle DeJour Floral - Oahu
Bliss in Bloom - Big Island of Hawai'i
Lulu Lush Beauty - Kauai
Meghan Daul - Kauai
Love and Beauty - Maui
Simply Beauty - Maui
Makeup with Barbie - Maui
Whik'd Hair & Makeup - Oahu
Big Island Hawaii Makeup - Big Island
Listen. You’ll never regret having video of your elopement. Especially because videographers capture the moments you don’t even realize are happening... and they get audio. Which means you’ll get to hear your vows, your laughter, your "oh my gosh we just got married" moments forever. It’s also a super sweet way to share your day with anyone who couldn’t be there in person.
Here are some of my favs:
Even if you’re going super low-key, trust me when I say: a killer bouquet makes a big difference. Plus, traditional Hawaiian leis? Absolutely iconic. I’ll hook you up with florists who create gorgeous, tropical designs that look effortless but are totally intentional.
Some florists who are truly amazing:
Not every bride feels the need for professional hair and makeup, and that’s totally okay! (You can totally do your own if you want something super natural.) But if you’re dreaming of a little glam session, or you want to feel like your absolute best self without the humidity wrecking your curls... I’ve got recommendations for that too.
Some beauty artists I trust and love:
Alright, time to talk about the not-so-glamorous (but important) part of how to elope in Hawaii – legal stuff and paperwork. Don’t worry, we’ll keep this light. Making your marriage official in Hawaii involves a few steps that might seem confusing at first. Let me break it down and show you that it’s actually totally doable (and remember, if I’m your photographer, I’m going to help you with this so you won’t be on your own).
step 3:
....I don’t blame you! It can seem complicated, especially if you’ve never dealt with this stuff. But this is where having me (or a planner) helps so much. I walk all my couples through these requirements step by step. I’ll remind you when to apply for your license, double-check you have the right documents, and obtain any needed permits on your behalf. Essentially, I’ll hold your hand through the legal mumbo-jumbo so you can focus on the fun parts.
step 4:
One of the best things about choosing to elope is that it’s all about you two—no rigid schedules, no pressure. Instead of just “taking photos,” your elopement day can be an adventure filled with fun activities that you both genuinely enjoy.
Hawaii offers endless ways to create lasting memories beyond just your ceremony.
Think about what you love doing together, and use that to plan your dream day. Whether it’s a hike to a secret lookout, indulging in a luxurious meal, or cruising down the coast with the top down, the options are endless. Here are some ideas to get you started...
1. Take a Charter to Nihau & Napali Coast: My friend who owns a charter on Big Island says that that this all-day Charter to Nihau (also known as forbidden island) has the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii, and as someone who spends 5 days a week in the water, I believe her!
2. Rent a Convertible and explore the island: Explore the Island: Plan a day to just explore where you are. If on Maui, drive the Road to Hana – we can stop at waterfalls and hidden beaches (I love tagging along for some candid photo ops if you’re up for a “day-after” adventure session!). On Big Island, you could stargaze atop Mauna Kea or visit a coffee farm in Kona. On Oahu, check out the surfer town of Haleiwa for shaved ice and cool vibes, or hike up to the Lanikai Pillbox for a panoramic view of those turquoise waters. Kauai has epic hiking in Waimea Canyon and along the Kalalau Trail (for experienced hikers) – talk about an adventure to remember.
3. Visit an Aquarium: If you’re animal lovers, spend a couple of hours visiting a local aquarium. There's one in Waikiki on Oahu, and the Maui Ocean Center in Maui.
4. Attend a luau! Nothing feels more Hawaiian than a good meal and great entertainment that pays tribute to the Hawaiian culture.
5. Helicopter or Scenic Plane Tour: There’s nothing like seeing Hawaii from above. In Kauai, a helicopter ride over the Nā Pali Coast will blow your minds (lush green cliffs dropping into the ocean, waterfalls everywhere). On Big Island, you can do a heli tour to see volcano lava flows (if Pele is putting on a show). This could be a thrilling activity the day before or after your elopement.
6. Go for a Picnic: Sunrise Hike or Sunset Picnic: Start or end your day with a little adventure. For example, hike to a lookout for sunrise – imagine exchanging private vows or just sharing a quiet moment as the sun peeks over the horizon. Pack your own picnic basket and enjoy a sunset picnic on the beach after your ceremony, complete with champagne and poke bowls. Companies like Maui Luxe Picnics can even set up a dreamy spread for you!
7. Savor a Cocktail at Lava Lava Beach Club: For a laid-back break, enjoy a tropical drink together—perfect for toasting to your new adventure together. There's a location in Kauai, and one in Big Island. I also love the Hula Grill, for similar vibes in Maui.
