If you’re dreaming of a Big Sur elopement, there are a few things to consider to make sure it's the perfect fit for your wedding day. Whether you've visited before or are just exploring the idea, I'll share all my insider tips from planning countless elopements in this stunning area. Let’s dive into my Big Sur elopement guide to help you create an unforgettable experience on the Central Coast.
Many Big Sur locals call fall “secret summer” because it’s warm, sunny, and less foggy. September and October often offer some of the best weather, with vibrant sunsets and fewer crowds. Fall’s golden light is perfect for capturing those dreamy, romantic photos along the coast. It typically is less foggy during fall, and less crowded too!
Big Sur winters can be rainy, but they can be gorgeous. Winter brings dramatic waves, misty redwood forests, and green hills. It’s a great option if you’re okay with a little unpredictability and love the idea of a moody, intimate setting. Keep in mind though, we can get some really nice days here in winter too, it’s a gamble, but I’ve been here in January and it was 75 degrees. Definitely not the norm, but Big Sur has much milder weather than many other popular California elopement locations like Yosemite or Lake Tahoe, so if you're looking for an adventure elopement in California and don't want to wait until spring to get married, then we say go for it!
Summer in Big Sur has warmer temperatures, but coastal fog is common, especially in the mornings. The fog can make for mystical, dreamy photos, but if you want clear skies, plan for later in the day. Summer weekends are busier, so consider a weekday elopement for more privacy. Overall summer is the most crowded time of the year, even on weekdays, due to an increase in tourism that's typical anywhere during summer, so keep this in mind, and plan for sunrise if you want something more intimate.
Spring is one of the best times for Big Sur, with lush green hills and vibrant wildflowers (hello, calla lilies!). The temperatures are comfortable, and spring is typically less crowded than summer. This season is perfect if you want a peaceful vibe with beautiful scenery.
Timing plays a big role in your Big Sur elopement experience. Big Sur’s coastal climate is unique—it’s often foggy and cool, but this only adds to the area’s magical vibe. Understanding the seasons and time of day can help you make the most of your elopement!
My hot take: the best time of year to elope in Big Sur is very early Spring February-May. It's gorgeously green here during spring and it's typically less crowded. Fall can also be great, after the summer tourism dies down. If I was going to elope here it would be during those times to avoid crowds and competition for permits.
For those dreamy, soft-lit photos, aim for sunrise or sunset. Early mornings are quieter, and sunsets give that golden glow. Early mornings and late afternoons (known as the "golden hour") are perfect for capturing the colors and textures of the cliffs and ocean, but if intimacy is your thing then we definitely recommend sunrise.
For Big Sur elopements, especially if you plan to do it in a public location like a state park, weekdays are a top choice since Big Sur can get pretty popular on weekends, especially around the beaches and scenic viewpoints. Picking a weekday, and even aiming for sunrise or sunset, can give you that secluded, dreamy experience without the crowd

After choosing a location, you’ll need to secure a permit. Permits might sound like the boring part, but they’re important to make sure everything runs smoothly! Big Sur has a mix of state parks, beaches, and private property, so permit requirements will vary based on your location. Most of the scenic spots, especially in state parks like Garrapata and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, require an elopement permit regardless of if you’re planning a ceremony or photography session.
Permits also help protect the beauty of Big Sur, ensuring the landscapes remain pristine. Fees vary depending on the site, but they’re generally affordable and often only take a quick application.
If you’re stressed about this part then don’t be! As your Big Sur Elopement Photographer and Planner I handle all the permit stuff for my elopement clients so you don’t have to! Let me handle the stuff that’s stressing you out so you can focus on all the fun parts!
Next you'll need an officiant, we recommend having a friend or family member become ordained, or you can use me! I'm officiated to perform ceremonies, which means I will oversee you two in more of a self-solemnization type of ceremony and be able to legally sign the paperwork as your officiant. You'll still need a witness (I can bring an assistant), or you can apply for a confidential marriage license to forgo having a witness. Remember, keeping things legal is key. Without the proper paperwork, you risk potential issues, and we definitely want to avoid that. So get those permits sorted and make sure everything’s in order for your big day!

step 4:
One of the best things about choosing to elope is that it’s all about *you two*—no rigid schedules, no pressure. Instead of just “taking photos,” your elopement day can be an adventure filled with fun activities that you both genuinely enjoy.
Big Sur, along with the nearby towns of Monterey, Carmel, and Pacific Grove, offers endless ways to create lasting memories beyond just your ceremony.
Think about what you love doing together, and use that to plan your dream day. Whether it’s a hike to a secret lookout, indulging in a luxurious meal, or cruising down Highway 1 with the top down, the options are endless. Here are some ideas to get you started...
1. Golfing at Pebble Beach: Tee off with stunning ocean views! Perfect for golf-loving couples who want to spend a relaxing morning together before the ceremony.
2. Rent a Convertible for a Scenic Drive: Nothing beats cruising down the iconic Highway 1 or the 17-Mile Drive with the wind in your hair and the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop.
3. Whale Watching Tour: Take a boat out from Monterey Bay and spot whales, dolphins, and sea otters. It’s a magical way to kick off or wrap up your day.
4. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium: If you’re animal lovers, spend a couple of hours at this world-famous aquarium exploring the wonders of the ocean.
5. Savor a Cocktail at Hula Grill: For a laid-back break, enjoy a tropical drink together—perfect for toasting to your new adventure together.
6. Beer Tasting at Alvarado Street Brewery: Ranked the third best small regional brewery in the United States by Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine in 2023, take a break and grab a flight of craft beer at this popular Monterey brewery. It’s the perfect casual stop if you’re looking to unwind.
7. Luxury Beach Picnic: Imagine a beautifully curated picnic on the sand with all your favorite goodies. Companies like Golden Sea Pop Up Picnics or Lady and Larder can set up a dreamy spread for you.
8. Share a Sourdough Bread Bowl on Fisherman’s Wharf: Monterey’s wharf is famous for its clam chowder in sourdough bowls. Grab one and take a leisurely stroll together!
9. Hiking in Garrapata State Park: Explore scenic trails with panoramic views of the coastline—an amazing way to connect with nature before your ceremony.
10. Spa Day at Ventana Big Sur: Treat yourselves to a luxurious couple’s spa experience at Ventana Big Sur, where you can unwind with massages, hot tubs, and breathtaking views.
As a California elopement photographer who’s lucky enough to live near Big Sur, and work there regularly, I’ve got a small piece of advice: don’t skimp on budgeting for a solid photographer.
Since most intimate elopements include just the two of you, your photos become even more important. You’ll want to find someone who truly understands you as a couple and aligns with your vision for the day. Bonus if they’re familiar with Big Sur and can use their local knowledge to your advantage!
It’s also key to choose a photographer who won’t take over your day but will support your plans and help bring your dreams to life.
Since photography is the way for you to look back on these special memories, you'll want to make sure to invest in a good photographer. Plan on setting aside an average of $5000 for an experienced Big Sur photographer.
It might feel a bit backward to book an elopement photographer in Big Sur before anything else, but there’s a really good reason to do it!
A great Big Sur elopement photographer isn’t just there to snap photos—they’re your secret weapon for planning the whole experience. With tons of local expertise, they can help you find those hidden spots, navigate park permits, and even figure out the best timing for epic light.
Plus, they often have a network of trusted vendors who are comfortable working in this rugged area, so they can connect you with florists, officiants, and more who are down for a Big Sur adventure.

"Salisha is AMAZING! We were looking for a Yosemite elopement photographer to capture our special day and I am beyond grateful that we chose to work with Salisha at Storybook Photography. My husband and I never take photos but she worked her magic and the photos came out better than I could have ever imagined. Salisha was such a pleasure to work with, I couldn’t have asked for a better photographer. She really makes you feel like you’ve known her for ages. She’s also a PRO at posing you if you’re not quite sure how to pose. She has such a creative eye and will think up shots that end up turning out amazing. I can't express my gratitude enough."
I found Salisha on Instagram while browsing for elopements in the Yosemite area. She responded so quickly to my inquiry and helped us so much along the way. What stood out to me the most is she does it all. She helped me pick beautiful locations, took amazing photos, was our minister and she helped us plan the day around bringing our pup. The day went smoothly and she was so kind. Not only do I recommend eloping in Yosemite, I 100% recommend booking with her.
