Do I need a permit to take photos, or have my photos taken by a professional photographer in Yosemite National Park?

This is a question I have heard many folks ask during my years as a Yosemite Photographer, so if you’re planning on having your photos taken in Yosemite National Park, I’d love to help clarify Yosemite’s photography rules for you!

While there are some regulations regarding photography and filming inside of Yosemite National Park, most of them don’t apply to the general public, who, of course, are all armed with a camera, or at least a camera phone, during their visits to Yosemite. However, things can be a little different for professional photographers or those planning more elaborate shoots.

If you’re wondering whether you need a permit to have your photos taken in Yosemite, here’s what you need to know.

General Photography in Yosemite: No Permit Needed

Yosemite National Park has specific guidelines to ensure that all visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the area without disruptions. Generally, if you’re taking photos as a hobby or for personal enjoyment, no permit is required. This is great news if you’re visiting the park and just want to snap some beautiful landscape shots or capture candid moments with friends and family. So, if you’re out for a day of hiking and want to take pictures of Yosemite’s iconic views, you’re free to do so.

However, there are a few cases where permits are required, especially when it comes to commercial or professional photography. The National Park Service (NPS) has established rules to regulate the use of Yosemite’s scenery for commercial purposes, to protect the environment, and to ensure that all visitors can enjoy the park without disturbance.

When Do You Need a Permit?

A permit is required for still photography in Yosemite if:

  • Product or service advertisement is involved: If you’re using the park as a backdrop for an advertisement, whether it’s for a brand, service, or product, you’ll need to get a permit.
  • Talent/models, props, crews, or sets are involved: If your photoshoot involves models, props (beyond just clothing), or more complex setups, a permit is necessary.
  • The project disrupts other park activities or visitors: Any commercial or professional activity that could interrupt the enjoyment of other visitors requires a permit.
  • More than just hand-carried equipment is used: The general rule is that as long as you’re only using hand-carried equipment, such as a tripod or a camera with interchangeable lenses, you’re good to go without a permit. But if you plan on using lighting setups, large props, or anything that goes beyond standard photography gear, a permit becomes necessary.
  • Access to restricted areas or off-hours is required: Some locations within Yosemite are closed to the public to protect wildlife or delicate ecosystems. If your shoot requires access to these restricted areas or if you’re hoping to shoot after the park is closed to the public, a permit is mandatory.
  • There’s a risk to park resources: Any activity that could potentially damage the park’s natural beauty or raise safety concerns requires a permit.

It’s essential to follow these guidelines, as they help preserve Yosemite for future generations while allowing professional photographers to make the most of the park’s stunning backdrops.

What About Permits for Yosemite Wedding Photography?

This is another common question I hear…

“Do I need a permit to take wedding photos in Yosemite National Park?”

The answer is still no, as long as you’re not actually holding a wedding ceremony within the park. Yosemite wedding ceremonies do require a permit, however, if you’re simply planning on visiting to take wedding photos (what I like to call a “bridal photography session”), you’re free to do so without a permit. This allows you to capture breathtaking moments in your wedding attire in front of iconic Yosemite landmarks like El Capitan or Half Dome without worrying about additional paperwork.

A bridal photography session is perfect for couples who want that adventure elopement style without actually getting married inside Yosemite. It’s also an excellent way to wear your wedding dress again and relive the magic of your wedding day, or even invest in a new set of wedding attire just for the photos.

Wedding Photo Sessions in Yosemite: A Memorable Experience

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing couples who choose Yosemite for a variety of reasons. Some opt for a bridal photography session to celebrate their upcoming wedding, while others visit Yosemite for a honeymoon photoshoot or even to mark an anniversary. It’s also not uncommon for couples to do a vow renewal in this spectacular setting, turning their love story into an unforgettable adventure.

Bridal photography sessions in Yosemite offer incredible flexibility. You can schedule them at any time, allowing you to choose the perfect lighting and season that matches your vision. Whether you’re after the lush green valleys of spring, the warm tones of fall, or the snow-capped peaks of winter, Yosemite provides a stunning backdrop year-round.

In fact, many couples find that Yosemite offers a more intimate experience for their wedding photos than a traditional venue, making the memories even more special. And the best part? You get to focus solely on capturing the beauty of your relationship against the dramatic landscapes, without any distractions.
